Like Twitter, Instagram is a real-time social platform that enables popular images to rise to the surface quickly, both on its network and on the other social networks it is linked to. We doubt it will take a photo like Krums’s to get other news organizations to follow NPR’s lead. As a quick, easy-to-use tool for taking and distributing photos — and thus drawing in audiences — it arguably has no peer, although its accessibility is severely limited by the fact that it is an iPhone-only application.

Social Media Is Not Advertising
When considering social media, I can’t fully deconstruct analytics or measurement tools. I respect them and recognize them as the valuable indicators of aggregate human behavior that they are, but I don’t *know* data. What I do know is that social media is not advertising.
Rather, it’s a litmus test to individuals, organizations and companies across strata: how do you handle change? How do you adapt? How flexible are you? How secure are you? (full article…)

Foursquare is getting a lot of attention these days, not just because of their meteoric growth, but also for being at the forefront of enabling businesses to market and promote with their location-based service. The promise of marketing with Foursquare is that it “will empower you to develop more engaging ongoing relationships with [your] customers” but the cost and risk involved make achieving this much harder than it sounds.
